Remove rust from the panels
Apply safe rust remover on the affected areas and clean them with soft cloth. Unless the rust is very thick and stubborn, there is no need for using steel wool as it may scratch and damage the metal. After the rust is gone completely, repaint the panel and replace the weather seals if they have become worn or damaged.
Replace worn pulleys immediately
Most people don't pay attention to their pulleys but these parts of your system are very important. They are the connecting parts of your springs and cables and if they are damaged, the door may either fall or jam. The fasteners must be checked often and replaced if needed. Without proper care, it is possible for these components to either rust or split in two.
Protect your door from the elements
Garage door materials are strong and are generally designed to be highly resistant to the elements via protective coating and special varnish. However, over time, wear and tear is possible without regular maintenance. We always recommend regular recoating and early treatment of any signs of mold or rust.
Replace the complete spring set
When one of your two springs has become worn or completely broken, it is highly recommended to replace both in order to avoid imbalance and unequal tension. If left, the remaining spring is likely to follow after anyway and the imbalance may lead to additional problems in the future.
